Lee Johnson has stated that Bryan Mbuemo was on Bristol City's watchlist before signing for Brentford in the summer.

It's been a good start to the season for the Robins, and despite the injury problems that have come their way, they have still managed to pick up a good amount of points that will stand them in good stead for the rest of the campaign.

Johnson's side face a rejuvenated Brentford side on Wednesday night, as the Bees ran out impressive victors against struggling Barnsley on Sunday.

The Robins boss has admitted he and the club looked at Mbuemo throughout the summer, but nothing materialised before his move to Brentford.

Speaking to Bristol Live, Johnson said: "I watched them [Brentford] first game of the season against Birmingham and I thought they were excellent in how they moved the ball as you'd expect from a Brentford side.

"They made a good signing in Bryan Mbeumo - a player that I liked a lot. He wasn't one that we became interested in but he was certainly one on our watchlist.

"And they've obviously got a similar type theme as us: buy the young players, develop them, put them together and hope they do the business.

"I think it will be a really tough game again. But the spirit our lads have shown has been really good and I hope that continues."

The Verdict

Johnson is a very honest boss and not many managers would admit to being interested in a player that they didn't sign in public circumstances.

It's going to be a good game on Wednesday night, with two very good footballing teams going head to head with each other and I'm sure Mbuemo will look to impress even more having seen this.

Both have showcased how well they can move the ball already this season, and that their attacking flair can cause problems for any side in the division.

Johnson will be hoping Mbuemo doesn't come back to haunt his side.
