Lee Johnson remains hopeful that Joe Bryan will stay at Ashton Gate, even though the left-back has been heavily linked with moves away.

The talented 24-year old only has 12 months left on his contract and recent reports have suggested Newcastle are keen on bringing him to the Premier League.

And, whilst The Robins won't want to lose another key player, the reality is they may have to cash-in given his contract situation.

However, Johnson told Bristol Live that Bryan could yet sign a new deal.

"Well I hope so. As I've said before there are a number of different agendas in a particular transfer as there are in a potential signing."

Yet, he did concede that the player is likely to move on if a new deal can't be agreed.

"But I have to do a job for my football club: and that is to re-sign Joe Bryan or if we we can't then it's to replace Joe Bryan for the money that we will undoubtedly receive for him."

The Verdict

Despite Johnson's somewhat positive message, it would be a huge surprise if Bryan signs a new deal given the top-flight interest in him.

Therefore, a departure seems inevitable although it's good to see the club are doing their best to try and convince him to remain at the club.

If that doesn't work though, it's about getting the best fee and searching for a replacement.
