Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has calmed fears over a potential injury to centre-back Tomas Kalas.

City broke their transfer record to sign Kalas earlier this summer after he impressed during his time on loan last season.

The Czech Republic international is currently with the senior squad at a pre-season training camp in Florida but has seen his preparations for the season interrupted.

The 26-year-old picked up an injury to his leg in the Robins' pre-season friendly defeat to Derby County on the weekend.

Speaking to Bristol Live after the game, Johnson was quick to confirm that the defender's injury was not serious and that he would be fit for the start of the season.

He said: "Yeah he is ok, he’s got a dead leg. It was actually funny watching him yesterday attempting to pick his keycard off the table while using crutches. He looked like the guy from There’s Something About Mary.

"He’s fine but probably going to be six or seven days (out), it was a sore one on his right leg.

"It’s a dead leg but you are always going to get these kind of knocks and bumps early in pre-season. Come the start of August he will be ready."

City have 20 days until they kick off their Championship season against Leeds United at Ashton Gate.

The Verdict

It is a huge relief for City that the injury to Kalas is not a serious one.

Kalas is potentially the most important signing of the summer for the Robins and losing him at this stage would've been a big blow for the start of the season.

Johnson will be hoping that Kalas can reignite his centre-back partnership with Adam Webster after the duo helped City to concede the fourth fewest goals in the league last season.

The Czech defender was a key player and made 41 appearances in his debut season at Ashton Gate and Johnson will want him to be a mainstay again in the 2019/20 campaign.
