Lee Johnson makes surprising admission ahead of Bristol City’s clash with Manchester United

Speaking ahead of Bristol City’s glamorous Carabao Cup tie with Manchester United on Wednesday evening, Lee Johnson has admitted that he would rather a victory over Queens Park Ranges in the Sky Bet Championship next weekend, than the scalp of the Premier League giants, as reported by the club’s official Twitter account.

Johnson’s side are welcoming Man United to Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening for an eagerly anticipated Carabao Cup clash, where the Robins will be looking to progress to the semi-finals of the competition at the expense of last season’s League Cup winners.

However, despite the enormity of tomorrow evening’s clash at Ashton Gate, Johnson has admitted that if he had a choice of progression to the semi-finals or three points in the Championship on Saturday, he would choose the latter.

Following tomorrow night’s cup clash, the Robins head to Loftus Road on Saturday afternoon, where they come up against QPR in the Championship, where Johnson’s side will be looking to strengthen their position in the top-six and hoping to add to the pressure on the likes of Wolves and Cardiff City.

Bristol City currently sit third in the Championship table, four points adrift of the automatic promotion places following the weekend’s victory over Nottingham Forest.

The Verdict

Johnson’s comments may come as a surprise, but it proves just how much Bristol City fancy their chance of promotion in the Championship this season, with every three points absolutely vital.

The Robins have done fantastically well this season, and whilst progression in the cup would be a dream, most at Ashton Gate would agree that the Championship would be more important.

However, it will be hard to keep the minds off the cup tie with Manchester United, which will serve Johnson’s players a huge test.
