Lee Johnson’s Bristol City side travel to Pride Park on Tuesday night, with both looking to build on rather mediocre starts to the season.
The Robins have struggled against Derby County in the past, winning just one of their past 12 Championship meetings with the Rams.
This will be an interesting encounter for both sets of supporters, as two sides meet who will look to finish closer to the top than the bottom.
The clubs actually met twice in pre-season during trips to Florida in the United States. The first fixture got abandoned due to serious weather warnings. However, the second, Derby won 2-1.
Speaking to BristolLive, Johnson said: “Derby are a good side and they have quality individuals. It will be interesting to see how Phillip Cocu enjoys the Championship.
“No doubt he’s a top manager and a top coach but we know how competitive this division is and the expectation at a big club like that, I’m sure they’ll be able to stand up to that.
“I think it will be a completely different game to the one in pre-season and both teams have signed new players and lost players for various reasons. I think it will be an interesting game.”
Lee Johnson will hoping that his side can back up a successful result on Saturday with another one at Derby. A draw wouldn’t be the worst result for his side but he’ll have every belief that they can win the game.
Cocu’s side have many strengths but looked fragile in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Stoke. It’ll be interesting to see how Cocu fairs in a division that plays regularly every Tuesday then Saturday.
Johnson will be hoping that he can add some positivity to Bristol City’s awful recent record against Derby and continue to help improve the squad having brought in a number of new signings.
