Lee Johnson has claimed that Tommy Rowe is the best summer signing of any Championship team.

The former Doncaster player arrived at Ashton Gate on a free transfer and his manager believes that because of the low cost of the move, it makes him the best pound-for-pound signing of the transfer window.

Rowe was left on the bench in the defeat against Leeds but has since featured in every Robins game, and played a big role in their 2-1 victory away at Derby last night.

Speaking post-match, as reported by Bristol Live, Johnson said: "Tommy Rowe looks like the signing of the season across the whole of the Championship for the value we got him.

The 30-year-old's versatility could prove valuable for Johnson this year, as although he is a natural centre midfielder he has filled in at left-wingback, and chipped in with a goal to earn his side a draw against Birmingham on his debut.

It is quite a bold call for Johnson to make so early on, particularly as he has signed quite a few players this summer, with Adam Nagy and Han-Noah Massengo also impressing the Robins boss so far.

The Verdict

Rowe is very experienced and he has slotted into the Bristol City side with remarkable ease, but it is perhaps too early for Johnson to be making such suggestions.

However, his view is understandable. Rowe signed on a free and has taken to his style very quickly, he understands what is expected of him and his energy on the left-flank provides great balance to the Robins.

If Rowe can continue his current form then by the end of the season he will certainly be amongst the best signings, but with big things expected of Jay DaSilva, it is questionable as to whether he will even be able to maintain his place in the starting lineup.
