Bristol City pulled off the biggest shock of the season so far last night, with Lee Johnson’s side defeating Manchester United at Ashton Gate to proceed to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Korey Smith’s stoppage-time strike ensured the Robins knocked out their fourth Premier League club of the season in the competition, and secured arguably the biggest result in Bristol City’s history.

Full-back Joe Bryan had opened the scoring with a terrific finish, before the hosts were pegged back by experienced striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s well-struck free-kick.

However Smith popped up in the dying stages to send the Ashton Gate crowd wild, setting up a two-legged last four clash with Premier League leaders, City.

Johnson was understandably delighted with the result.

“I’m delighted for the players, every single one of them was outstanding tonight,” Johnson told the club’s official site.

“I’m almost speechless.

“I’m very proud of the football club today.”

The Verdict

What the Robins did at Ashton Gate last night was remarkable, and fans will remember the night for the rest of their lives.

Johnson almost lost his job last season after the Robins struggled towards the foot of the table, and the board must be congratulated for sticking by Johnson during that difficult spell.

The young boss has completely turned this side around, and it would take a brave man to bet against the club going on to achieve promotion to the Premier League this season.

Bristol City are a club on the up, and whatever happens over two-legs against City, the manager will be proud of what his side have accomplished in the competition this season.
