Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has revealed that he is set to enter talks with the club about extending his contract at Ashton Gate.

Johnson took charge of Bristol City in February 2016, and guided thee club to a League Cup semi final last season, while The Robins only missed out on the Championship play-offs this season on the final day.

The 37-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract at the club, but it appears that neither party want him to leave, with Johnson revealing that talks over a new contract are already being planned.

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, Johnson was quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "I'm very happy here, I don't envisage leaving and I'm due to sit down and talk as soon as possible."

The Robins boss revealed that talks had already been due to start, but had been delayed due to other aspects of club business, as he added: "We were supposed to speak about it last week but I was in Portugal watching players and Steve was in Guernsey.

"I believe looking into someone's eyes in the best way to do it. Football's fickle, we know that. I love it at this club."

Looking ahead to his future at the club, Johnson didn't hold back when discussing his ambitions with Bristol City as he claimed: "My intention is to be here to fulfil our ambition, which is to strive towards Premier League football.

"I want to be promoted and I'm excited about the future."

The verdict

This is a big boost for Bristol City.

It feels as though Johnson has been gradually taking the club closer to a place in the Premier League, and that is not something they will want to give up on now.

There have already been talks about a big summer in terms of player signings, but with what Johnson has done during his time at Ashton Gate - taking the club from relegation candidates to play-off hopefuls - this could be just as important as any of those signings.
