Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has revealed he will be keeping tabs on a number of players he watched during his recent scouting trip to Spain.

Johnson watched a number of players during his trip to the continent over the international break, which he undertook after overseeing Bristol City's impressive start to the season where they remain unbeaten since the opening day of the season.

The Robins are currently sitting sixth in the Championship table after 11 matches, and they have just strengthened their playing ranks following the addition of Spanish striker Rodri on an initial deal until January.

Johnson has now hinted there are already other transfer targets he is keeping an eye on as a result of his trip to Spain, with there having been a host of talented players in action during the matches watched by the Bristol City boss.

Current Robins midfielder Han-Noah Massengo was one of those players to feature, with Johnson revealing he watched the 18-year-old play in a France U20s match against Norway u20s, in addition to a selection of other matches.

"I thought it was a good game," Johnson told Bristol Live.

"They were high quality games - intensity, particularly in the heat. I watched Belgium, I watched Norway Under 20s versus France Under 20s, I watched England Under 19s and naturally, there's some real talent on the pitch.

"I thoroughly enjoyed it, to be honest. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed quite so much if the climate hadn't been as good as it was. Certainly, a few to keep tabs on as potential loans in the future or maybe permanent transfers, depending on their situations."

The recent addition of Rodri marks the second time Johnson has now added to his ranks following the closure of the transfer window, with the Robins manager also adding Welsh defender Ashley Williams back in August.

The Verdict

It is interesting to hear that Johnson decided to use the international break to conduct something of a scouting mission to Spain, as it shows he is clearly keen on expanding his side's scouting network to the continent.

This comes after the Robins signed striker Rodri on a short-team deal following his release from January, and perhaps this deal has alerted Johnson to the fact it might be worth him looking at the European market for future signings.

By going to watch these matches in Europe, Johnson would have been able to watch a selection of fresh talent up close, while also building relationships with key figures ahead of possible transfer business in the future.
