Lee Johnson gives Sunderland team news update ahead of Sheffield Wednesday clash

Sunderland are hopeful Carl Winchester will return for Sheffield Wednesday clash.

Lee Johnson was uncertain whether the Northern-Irishman could make it for Thursday night’s game against eighth place Wednesday.

“Whether or not he’ll make it for tomorrow is another question – we’re giving him any chance,” said Johnson, via Sunderland Echo

“We’ve left him off it [in training] as long as possible to let the injury heal, and to give it a lot of therapy.

“I’d probably say he is 50/50 for the Sheffield Wednesday game.”

Sunderland were pleased to see the return of Corry Evans at Doncaster. The strong, early lead the Black Cats earned that game even allowed him to be taken off early to help build up his fitness, which Johnson was quite happy with.

“It absolutely strengthens us,” said the Sunderland boss.

“Obviously the only worry is him going into a second game three days later, but it was nice to be in charge of the game enough that we could take him off after half an hour.

“That will definitely serve us well going into the Sheffield Wednesday game.”

Sunderland are second in the League One table, with 14 wins from 23 games so far in the season.

Johnson’s men are one point behind league leaders Rotherham and, more precariously, only lead Wigan Athletic by one point despite having played two more games than the Latics.

The Verdict

Johnson’s optimism around the recovery of Evans was good news for Sunderland fans. His returns bolsters their options in midfield, and their performance against Doncaster has helped them ensure he can manage his fitness.

Winchester has been an ever-present in Sunderland’s side all season, so it’s good news that he won’t be out for very long and could even return as early as this Thursday.

However, if the club are uncertain as to the extent of his fitness then it might be better for the team to play it safer instead of risking a longer-term injury.
