Sunderland are among a host of clubs interested in signing Barnsley winger Luke Thomas, according to Gloucestershire Live.

Lee Johnson is likely to want to strengthen his squad in January, as the Black Cats look to close the gap on the League One play-off places.

According to Gloucestershire Live, Barnsley winger Luke Thomas is a target for Sunderland, as well as Oxford United and several other League One sides.

Thomas joined Barnsley from Derby County last season, after the winger impressed in loan spells with Coventry City and Gloucester City.

The winger scored one goal and produced four assists in 39 Championship appearances for Barnsley last term, but has found regular game time somewhat hard to come by this time around.

The 21-year-old has made only six league starts for Valerien Ismael's side, and has now been linked with a January move away from Oakwell.

The Verdict

This would be an exciting signing for Sunderland.

Lee Johnson has already spoke about his desire to sign exciting, attacking players in January to add pace and power to his side, and Thomas fits the bill.

He likes to get the ball down and take players on, and he has been impressive since joining Barnsley despite not playing all too regularly.

He recorded some decent stats last season, and you'd back him to be a regular for Sunderland if he made the move to the Stadium of Light.
