Sunderland boss Lee Johnson has confirmed that the club are on the verge of a transfer breakthrough, with James Hunter from The Chronicle indicating that is for Carl Winchester.
Hunter has taken to Twitter to provide Johnson’s transfer update: “We are very close to one signing – the i’s are dotted but the t’s aren’t crossed.”
It’s believed that Forest Green midfielder, Winchester, is Sunderland’s man.

Wouldn't name him, but says it's a midfielder.
That'll be Carl Winchester from Forest Green. #safc

Winchester, 27, has featured on 18 occasions in League Two this season for Forest Green and scored two goals. His performances have helped the club into a decent position in the promotion race, with the club third as things stand.
However, the Northern Ireland international now looks set to depart the club and head to the Stadium of Light.
There, he will link up with Johnson, who is looking to lead the side back into play-off contention. They currently sit 11th in the table and have games in hand on those directly above them in the table.
In terms of other incomings at the Stadium of Light, Johnson has suggested that he is hoping to make two or three more signings this month.
This is good news for the Black Cats.
It is vitally important that Johnson gets his men in this winter. It is his first transfer window as the club’s manager and he needs resources to really be a success.
Winchester is a player that’s impressed in League Two and it’s going to be interesting to see if he’s got the capacity to step up and match big demands at the Stadium of Light.
