Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has revealed that the club are weighing up a move for right-back Nathan Thompson who is a free agent.

The 28-year-old has spent the past two years at League One Portsmouth and played 33 times as Kenny Jackett's side reached the play-offs before they went out in the semi-final to Sunderland last season.

However, even though Pompey wanted to keep the player, Thompson decided to leave the south coast club when his contract expired this summer and he has yet to sign elsewhere.

And, Johnson told Bristol Live reporter Gregor MacGregor that they are looking into the possibility of bringing the versatile former Swindon man to Ashton Gate.

"We're having a look at Nathan Thompson. He's out of contract."

Thompson featured for the U23 side as they played Yeovil this afternoon, whilst the first-team were thrashed by five goals at home to Crystal Palace in their final pre-season friendly of the summer.

Should the Robins finalise a deal for the free agent it would be a controversial move as he angered Bristol City supporters in the past when playing for Swindon with the way he celebrated.

The Verdict

Even though some of the fans may not want this deal because of the previous Thompson has with them, it would be a sensible deal purely in terms of what he can add to the squad.

Bristol City need cover at right-back, which he can provide, whilst he is also capable of filling in various other positions which is very useful.

So, to get a player like that, who is also very experienced, on a free transfer would be a smart bit of business.

It's now down to Johnson to make a decision on the player or they will be forced to move onto another target with the deadline fast approaching.
