Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has revealed that attacking midfielder Kasey Palmer won't be departing the club in this January transfer window.

BristolLive are reporting that Johnson made the transfer admission following their 1-1 draw at home to Shrewsbury Town at the weekend.

Johnson said: "It's really, really simple: everybody at Bristol City wants nothing but the best for Kasey Palmer. Without question of a doubt.

"He's a fantastic talent and he's definitely going through a cycle that a lot of young players do.

"We've talked about it before where he hasn't got the mothership to return to and you've got to fight through what could be a lack of confidence or something else.

"I thought he did well today, considering that he hasn't played for a bit. His fitness is that he's not a natural flyer but he gave it a go.

"He received the ball well and he was strong on occasions. And he was two or three slidey balls away from having a really effective game in possession.

"We want the best for Kasey.

"Listen, he'll stay in. I know there's been rumour of him going out on loan - it's never an option for us. It's a case of hold the shirt. Get in the squad and hold the shirt and produce your best football."

It had previously been reported that the Robins were planning on loaning the 23-year-old out to Championship rivals Swansea City after he had been absent from the last three league matchday squads, however, Palmer found himself in the starting lineup for the Shrewsbury clash.

The midfielder has made 20 appearances for the club this season following his permanent move to Ashton Gate from Chelsea in the summer, after spending the second half of last season on loan at the club.

The talented playmaker progressed through the academy at Chelsea alongside the likes of Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori, and spent loan spells away from Stamford Bridge with Huddersfield Town, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers before spending the last year at Ashton Gate.

The Verdict

Attacking midfielder Palmer is one of Bristol City's more promising prospects, and Johnson would not want to lose the midfielder to anyone, let alone a rival from the same league even if it was a temporary move.

Johnson has laid down a challenge for the young player to take on, and it is now down to Palmer on how determined he is to try and retain his place in the matchday squad following an impressive showing against Shrewsbury at the weekend.

Palmer could have all the talent in the world, but he will have to work his hardest if he is to retain the Bristol City shirt.
