Birmingham caretaker boss Lee Carsley made it four points from two games after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday last night.

After substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz came on and made an immediate impact in the draw at Derby, it was another of Carsley's subs who delivered last night.

Isaac Vassell was on the pitch just 15 minutes before he scored the winner to give Blues a much needed three points.

His performance delighted his new boss who praised Vassell when speaking to the club's media.

Obviously, he's come in, he's got his head down, he's training really, really hard. He's working at his game, he's still got a lot of development to come and I think we're lucky to have him.

Not only is he a good player, he's a good guy.

The speed and direct style of Vassell will cause problems for the opposition and with Che Adams and Jota injured, Carsley may be calling on the former Luton man a lot over the coming games to add that spark up top.

Even thought they secured the win last night, Birmingham still remain in the bottom three and travel to Hull on Saturday where they face Leonid Slutsky's side, who have been on an awful run recently.

The Verdict

The signing of Isaac Vassell may have gone under the radar given the activity at St. Andrew's over the past few months.

However, he's proven that he can offer something at this level after stepping up from League Two.

He's quick, exciting and hungry to do well which makes him a real threat. He could go on to be a key player for Blues this season and could be in line for his first league start on Saturday.
