Sheffield Wednesday caretaker manager Lee Bullen managed to do in a single game the same thing Jos Luhukay managed in ten; secure all three points in a Championship match.

He oversaw a return to the side for popular keeper Keiren Westwood and a 1-0 win that doubtless delighted the 22,000 fans inside Hillsborough. Despite the win, Bullen is unlikely to be after the job on a permeant basis, with two key figures seen in the crowd for the game.

Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, key generals of former Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce, were watching the game which indicates a swoop for an experienced manager.

Bullen couldn't confirm the rumour post-match, but his comments certainly suggested it could be on the table.

“From my point of view it looks like they (Bruce and his staff) are coming in but I have no confirmation either way,” Bullen told the BBC.

He did have an important message for Dejphon Chansiri, should he be given the chance to speak to Steve Bruce.

“If that is the case I think the chairman has done the right thing. For a manager of Steve’s credentials, if you get the opportunity to talk to him, you don’t knock it back. He’s been there and done it.”

The win gives the Owls 27 points ahead of the festive period, eight clear of the relegation zones. They face two tough matches over Christmas, trips to Middlesbrough and West Brom, but they won't find themselves in the bottom three come the first match of 2019 which some fans feared.

The Verdict

Steve Bruce back in the game? It's a dangerous move by the owner, if it goes ahead. Sure, Bruce is an old hand and has contacts as well as experience, but he failed at Villa.

He might keep them up, but he's not the man to take them forward, wherever he's been and whatever he's done.
