Sheffield Wednesday caretaker boss Lee Bullen has revealed that defender David Bates could make his debut for the Owls against Rotherham United in the EFL Cup tomorrow night.

The 22-year-old joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan from German side Hamburg on transfer deadline day.

The centre-back is yet to make his debut for the Owls and has appeared on the bench just once so far this season - the 1-0 win over Luton Town last week.

However, Bullen has been speaking to the media at his press conference ahead of the second-round cup tie with Rotherham, when he revealed that Bates has impressed in training and is in contention to start the game at the New York Stadium.

"David Bates has trained really well and is certainly in contention to start tomorrow," Bullen said at his pre-match press conference.

Bullen also confirmed at his press conference that defender Liam Palmer is likely to miss the game against Rotherham tomorrow. The full-back has missed the Owl's last two matches with a back injury, but has returned to training.

Sheffield Wednesday have made an encouraging start to the new season under Bullen and are currently seventh in the Championship table after taking nine points from their opening five matches.

The Verdict

Bates could turn out to be a good signing for Sheffield Wednesday, so it's good news that he could make his debut for the Owls tomorrow night.

He's a good defender and he's got an impressive amount of experience for such a young age. He should be able to add some more depth and quality to the Owls' defence this season.

The game against Rotherham in the EFL Cup could be the perfect opportunity for him to make an impact and try to stake his claim to start matches in the Championship this season.
