Birmingham City boss Lee Bowyer was placed under more pressure on Easter Monday as his side fell to an embarrassing 6-1 loss to Blackpool, a defeat that will live long in the memory for all the wrong reasons.

This has summed up the Blues' season so far, though they were able to get off to a promising start to the 2021/22 campaign as they climbed into the play-off spots following a win against Derby County back in September.

However, their form since then has been largely abysmal and without points deductions for Reading and Derby County this term, they would currently be in the relegation zone with just three league games left to play.

With these deductions being implemented for both the Rams and the Royals earlier this year though, Bowyer's side are officially safe from the drop, though that hasn't necessarily made the 45-year-old's job safe at this stage.

Coming up against Millwall, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers in their last three league games of the campaign, they could face a tough end to 2021/22 and these results may end up being crucial in the West Midlands outfit's board's decision on whether to keep their current manager on.

Looking ahead to his potential sacking, we discuss what we already know so far and whether a dismissal is likely at this stage.

What do we know so far?

According to a Twitter update from journalist Pete O'Rourke on Monday evening, Bowyer is on the verge of leaving St Andrew's and this news came very shortly after their 6-1 defeat at Bloomfield Road.

Official confirmation of his dismissal hasn't come yet - but this update comes as no real surprise with the 45-year-old's job reported to have been back in danger way back in January - and their form hasn't hugely improved since then.

A separate report from Football Insider on Monday revealed the Blues' boss was fighting for his job with the possibility of him being sacked before the end of the campaign - and is thought to be enduring a "tense" relationship with Technical Director Craig Gardner.

Bowyer admitted after the Blackpool game that he would be willing to step aside if the Blues' board no longer had confidence in him - but was prepared to plough on until then with just a few games left to go until the end of this term.

Losing their last three matches and conceding 12 goals during that run though, he may be lucky to hold on to his job until the conclusion of 2021/22.

Is a sacking likely to happen?

Unfortunately, it does look as though he will be leaving either now or at the end of the campaign which is a huge shame, because the Blues seemed to be flying under his stewardship in the latter stages of last season and the start of this campaign.

Something that has to be acknowledged is the fact their underwhelming finishes in the league isn't just down to the manager - because multiple men have been at the helm in recent years and have achieved similarly poor results.

That's why a big overhaul is needed regardless of whether their current manager stays on or not - but it's currently unclear whether he's the man to take on this rebuild after suffering disappointing during 2021/22.

Results on the pitch need to be semi-respectable though and as previously mentioned, they have conceded 12 goals in their last three matches, not an acceptable total and one that has made it impossible for the second-tier side to pick up points.

And if they fail to pick up a respectable number of points in the remaining matches, his job may become untenable, especially if that report about tensions between the scenes between him and Bowyer is accurate.
