Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has revealed that a new contract offer has been tabled by the Addicks to keep him at the club, but that he won't be putting pen to paper just yet.

The former Leeds midfielder is out of contract this summer and has been linked with the Queens Park Rangers job, but there has now been a contract offer from owner Roland Duchatelet.

However, that offer has been described as 'different' by Bowyer, who will now wait for a second option.

“What they have put to me is a bit different,” the Addicks chief told the South London Press. “I want to see if there’s also something that is normal. It’s more like an incentive contract than just a normal basic wage. It’s more like an incentivised one."

“They were just going to see what I thought of it and then come back to me with a normal basic wage on. This one is something a bit different.”

Bowyer is currently in his first managerial role, but has taken Charlton to the League One play-off spots, where only a miracle would now see them finish any lower than sixth.

They will have to face the extra games at the end of the normal season and after that, a number of their top stars are currently free to leave the club.

The Verdict

It seems an odd way to go about the business.

Lee Bowyer has clearly packaged it in a particular way, suggesting the process is normal, but you have to wonder how he feels about being treated in this way.

He's an exciting up and coming manager. The owner should treat him like one. They might have saved money on player sales and not recruiting, but they shouldn't play roulette with the manager as well.
