Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has revealed that his side missed out on signing Sheffield United playmaker Mark Duffy in the transfer window.

The Addicks were extremely active in the summer transfer market, particular towards the latter stages of the window as Jonathan Leko and Sam Field arrived on loan from West Bromwich Albion.

It has now also been revealed that Charlton missed out on signing Mark Duffy from Sheffield United - the 33-year-old scored six goals and made seven assists for the Blades after they won promotion to the Premier League last term.

But after the signings of the likes of Luke Freeman and Ben Osborn, the experienced midfielder soon fell out of favour at Bramall Lane and signed for Stoke on a season-long loan deal on Deadline Day.

Speaking about Stoke, the team Charlton faced at the weekend, Bowyer said via the Stoke Sentinel: "They’ve got some good individuals. Obviously [Mark] Duffy’s just gone there from Sheffield United. A very good player, he’s someone that we were looking at."

Charlton claimed their second league win in as many games at the weekend, brushing aside the Potters thanks to goals from Lyle Taylor, Chuks Aneke and Conor Gallagher.

Stoke, meanwhile, sit on zero points after two defeats in their first two games of the season.

The Verdict

Duffy would have been a fantastic signing for Charlton, especially in the system that they like to play.

His best position is sitting behind the striker in the number 10 role, so playing in behind Taylor and Aneke could have been fantastic for them.

Thankfully for Bowyer, Duffy didn't make too much of an impact for Stoke as he came on as a sub at the weekend.
