Lee Bowyer confirms Charlton talent’s fresh injury setback

Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has confirmed that midfielder Josh Cullen has been ruled out of action for at least two months after suffering an ankle injury.

Cullen was absent during Charlton’s 2-1 defeat to Luton on Tuesday night after being stretchered off during the draw with Cardiff on Saturday, and the midfielder now looks set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage.

The 23-year-old had been an ever-present figure for Charlton in the Championship this season prior to his injury over the weekend, with the West Ham loanee providing a reliable presence in the centre of the park for Bowyer’s side.

However, Cullen has now joined the Addicks’ ever-growing injury list which also includes the likes of Lyle Taylor and Jonny Williams, with Bowyer currently having a total of 11 players unavailable due to injury.

Following the Luton defeat, Bowyer suggested that Cullen would be out of action until just after Christmas, but it now appears the midfielder will miss between two and three months with this fresh setback.

“It is a minimum of eight weeks,” he told South London Press. “It could be nearer to 12.”

Cullen has been an integral figure for the Addicks since he first joined the club on loan at the start of last season, with the former Bolton man having now made a total of 48 appearances for the South London outfit.

The Verdict

Charlton would have thought their injury luck couldn’t get any worse with there being 11 players currently injured, but this latest blow is perhaps one of the most damaging given Cullen’s reliable form for Charlton this season.

The 23-year-old has offered excellent composure in possession for the Addicks since his arrival at the club, while he has also performed defensive responsibilities to prove he is a well-rounded midfielder.

The Addicks’ injury problems are now beginning to seriously affect the club’s results this term, and it is now of paramount importance that the club protect their players to ensure there are no further setbacks.
