Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has revealed that midfielder Beram Kayal has returned to parent club Brighton to receive treatment on his ongoing injury problem.

Kayal joined the Addicks on a season-long loan deal from Brighton towards the end of the summer transfer window, but he has featured on six occasions for Lee Bowyer's side since his arrival at The Valley.

The 31-year-old last featured for Charlton during their 2-1 defeat to South London rivals Millwall before the international break, and it has now emerged that he has temporarily returned to the south coast following another setback.

Kayal has shown glimpses of his quality during his two starts and four substitute appearances for Bowyer's side, but he has not yet been fully fit for long enough to hold down a place in the Charlton starting line-up.

Speaking to South London Press, Bowyer issued a positive update on the likes of Lyle Taylor and Chuks Aneke, but he then revealed the latest news on Kayal's injury troubles.

“He went back to Brighton and had an injection while he was away [on international duty]. But I don’t think that his injury is as straightforward as we thought. We’re waiting on Brighton to see what they are saying," he said.

Kayal has made 131 appearances for Brighton since he first joined the club in 2015, but he has struggled for game time due to a mixture of injuries and inconsistency in recent seasons which ultimately led to his loan switch to the Addicks.

The Verdict

It always seemed like a risk for Charlton to recruit Kayal on a loan deal given his fitness concerns, but the fact he possesses evident quality would have been enough to convince Bowyer to press ahead with the deal.

However, it has not worked out for Kayal since his move to the South London outfit as he has sustained a number of injury setbacks, with this only adding to Charlton's injury crisis which has now affected their league form.

The extent of Kayal's latest problem remains to be seen, but Bowyer will surely now be considering the possibility of sending the midfielder back to Brighton permanently in order to make room for a fully-fit new signing in January.
