Charlton manager Lee Bowyer says that he expects to be offered a new contract at The Valley by the end of the week, though he says promotion to the Championship is his number one priority.

Since being handed the role in March 2018, Bowyer led the Addicks unsuccessfully into the League One play-offs last season, and has his side set for another shot at them this season, as they currently sit fifth in the League One table with seven games of the season remaining.

Speaking about his future to The South London Press, Bowyer, who is out of contract at the end of June, said: “I had a message saying they [Charlton] are going to be proposing something to me this week."

The one time England midfielder does not however appear to be too concerned about the contract situation, adding: “But for me, the most important thing is we just keep winning games. That’s the priority for me. The contract thing, that will sort itself out – I’m sure it will.

“I want us to try and go the rest of the season unbeaten and get promoted."

The news comes as reports surfaced that Championship side QPR are considering Bowyer as a potential replacement to Steve McLaren, whose time in charge at Loftus Road came to an end on Monday following a run of just one win in 15 games.

The Verdict

Following the rumours linking Bowyer with QPR, this news will come as a huge relief to Charlton fans, as will Bowyer's comments, with him seemingly clear that his sole focus is on getting them into the Championship next season.

Bowyer's debut job in management at The Valley is all the more impressive when you consider the challenging situation in which he is working, and for that reason you feel Charlton fans will be keen to keep him around for some time longer yet.
