Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has described his side's 2-1 defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday night as the most hurtful game he has had during his time at the club.

The Addicks were leading Lee Johnson's side in the second half courtesy of Macauley Bonne's opening goal, but Famara Diedhiou then equalised for the hosts before Josh Brownhill's 98th-minute winner sealed the Robins' victory.

The result meant Charlton failed to build on their 3-0 victory over Derby on the weekend, but Bowyer's side are still sitting 10th in the Championship having won six of their 13 games since their promotion from League One last term.

Bowyer's touchline ban meant he was forced to watch Wednesday evening's encounter from the Ashton Gate stands, and he claimed after the game that his side were hurting because they felt they deserved more from the match.

“Wednesday is probably the most hurtful game we’ve had since I’ve been here," he told Charlton's official Twitter account.

"We were good and deserved more, but that’s this division. The positive is that we’re still doing well, even with all these injuries.”

The Bristol City defeat came as a setback following Charlton's solid start to the season, which they have managed to maintain despite recent injuries to the likes of Lyle Taylor, Ben Purrington and Chuks Aneke.

The Verdict

Charlton have good reason to feel like they deserved more from Wednesday's match as they seemed to have the game under control until the final 20 minutes where they let their lead slip.

Bristol City found their route back into the match in the immediate aftermath Bowyer's decision to withdraw midfielder Beram Kayal from the match, but he did not have much option given the Brighton loanee's lack of game time.

The defeat will still be hurting Bowyer's side as they look ahead to the weekend, but they cannot afford to dwell on the result too much as they now face another tough test in Slaven Bilic's high-flying West Brom side.
