Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has admitted that he was tempted by the chance to manage Huddersfield Town, but has instated that it was the right decision for him to stay at The Valley.

Bowyer guided Charlton to promotion to the Championship last season and was one of the favourites for the vacant managerial position at Huddersfield - which has since been filled by former Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley.

However, the 42-year-old decided to remain at The Valley, remaining loyal to the club where he started his playing career and the one that gave him his first opportunity in management.

Bowyer has admitted that while he was tempted by the chance to manage the Terriers, he simply could not leave Charlton, and has insisted that remaining at The Valley is the best decision for his career.

“I stayed because what we’ve built here is very good. The club means a lot to me personally. I started off here as a kid. For me to leave this football club it will have to be something big,” Bowyer told talkSPORT.

“Yes, there has been interest since I’ve been manager here. If you do well and you’re successful then other clubs will want you, it’s as simple as that.

“Of course it was tempting to go there [to Huddersfield]. It’s great to be recognised for what you’re doing. But it was about what was right for my career, and more importantly what was right on a moral level.

“My family are local and we’re sitting second in the league. I’ve got a good bunch of players, some of them have come here specifically to learn from myself – I couldn’t just walk away.

“I thought it be wrong of myself to do that and leave this all behind it. I just couldn’t do it. Yes, there have been ups and downs, but that is part and parcel of football.”

Charlton are unbeaten in the Championship this season and are currently second in the league table after winning four of their opening six matches.

The Addicks will be looking to continue their momentum when they face ninth-placed Birmingham City at The Valley this weekend.

The Verdict

I think Bowyer has made the right decision. Huddersfield are a big club and I'm sure he would have been tempted by the chance to manage there, but I don't think it's the right time for him to leave Charlton.

He started his playing career at Charlton and they also gave him his first opportunity in management, I think he's done the right thing by deciding to remain loyal and stick by the club.

If he continues to do well, there will be other opportunities for him in the future, but he's done a tremendous job at Charlton so far and there really was no reason for him to leave.

Charlton have made a fantastic start to the new season in the Championship and Bowyer appears to be building something special at The Valley. Keeping hold of their manager is absolutely crucial to the club's chances of success this season.
