Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has said that he believes Lyle Taylor is the best striker in League One.

Taylor finished the season with 21 goals, the fourth most in the division and level with Doncaster striker John Marquis, but Bowyer says that the former Wimbledon man is about more than just goals.

"For me, Lyle is the best striker in the league," he told the club's official Twitter account.

"He’ll admit he wasn’t an all-round striker, but he is now. He tracks back and that is priceless.

"We know he can finish and his hold-up play is very good. His movement is good and he’s hard to mark. He’s been involved in more goals than anybody else in this league.”

Charlton leapt above both Sunderland and Portsmouth on the final day of the season with a 3-0 win against Rochdale whilst Grant McCann's Donny secured the final spot on the same day.

And the pair will face off in the semi-finals of the League One play-offs with the battle between Marquis and Taylor sure to be a focal point.

Lee Bowyer's Addicks finished 15 points better off in the league season and go into the clash as convincing favourites. But this is the play-offs and anything can and will happen.

Kick-off for the first leg is at 12:15 on Sunday whilst the other League One clash between the Black Cats and Pompey takes place on Saturday evening.

The verdict

Taylor has improve an awful lot under Bowyer and that is a testament to both of them.

Before, he was purely a finisher. A very good one, but he had very few other strings to his bow.

Now, he linking play better than anyone else and laying on goals for the rest of his teammates so is sure to be absolutely crucial in the play-offs.
