Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has admitted that he would have been interested in signing Wigan Athletic duo Kieffer Moore and Jamal Lowe during the summer transfer window, had he had the funds available to do so.

Both Moore and Lowe made the move to The DW Stadium during the summer, having joined from Barnsley and Portsmouth respectively.

According to reports, Moore cost Wigan around £4million, while the Lancashire side are said to have paid around £2.5million to secure the services of Lowe.

Now however, it seems that the pair could have had a different destination on the cards had Bowyer got his wish, after the Charlton manager admitted his interest in the two players.

Speaking to the South London Press about the attacking duo ahead of his side's meeting with Wigan on Saturday, Bowyer revealed: “He [Moore] is one I would take – but we couldn’t afford him.

“I would have taken the pair of them but they were out of our price range.

“[Lowe] is a good player. He is in a different position now, playing behind the frontmen, and he looks good there. He is good in possession and has got pace. He is definitely going to be one of their main threats.”

Both Moore and Lowe are yet to find the net for their new side this season, with Wigan currently 21st in the Championship and without a win since the opening day of the campaign.

Charlton meanwhile sit third in the early standings despite their first league defeat of the season at home to Birmingham last Saturday, following their impressive start to the season that saw them win four and draw two of their opening seven games of the season.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

Given their past records, you can understand why Bowyer would have been interested in the pair, and there may have been some frustration he was unable to make moves for them.

That being said, with the slow starts that both Moore and Lowe have made to the Championship season, it seems Charlton may have been better off keeping their money in their pocket, at least for the time being.

Even so, with top scorer Lyle Taylor facing a spell on the sidelines through injury, having an additional option upfront such as Moore may have been rather welcome at Charlton right now.
