Lee Bowyer has claimed that Lyle Taylor put in his best display in a Charlton shirt last Saturday, as the Addicks secured a 3-1 win over Luton at The Valley.

The Addicks boss made the bold claim to London News Online, after the 29-year-old scored an important brace at the weekend which took his goal tally to 11 for the season.

“Lyle was exceptional from start to finish – that’s the best game he has played under me," Bowyer said.

“Not just because of the goals but his all-round performance. He didn’t lose the ball and his link-up play was very good."

Taylor scored from both of his shots on target during the game, with his first goal the pick of the bunch. He took a touch to set himself after David Davis' through pass, before unleashing an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

He then netted a penalty in the 61st minute to double Charlton's lead.

Bowyer added that Luton's defenders had trouble handling the 29-year-old attacking prowess.

“The people he is playing against now are better players [than when he starred for Charlton in League One]. Cameron Carter-Vickers was at Spurs – he is a proper centre-half," he added.

“I don’t think he lost the ball once on Saturday. He bullied both Luton’s centre-halves.”

The Charlton boss also said the forward's morale is positive at present, which is having a good effect on the team and his own individual performances.

“Lyle is in a good place now and we need him to stay there – that comes down to me to keep pushing him. If he keeps playing like that then we will win more games than we lose," Bowyer said.

The Verdict

It is certainly a bold claim from Lee Bowyer, who has seen Taylor score goals for the Addicks since the start of last season.

However, considering the level of the opposition he has been coming up against in the Championship, his goals this term have been a step above.

Taylor's brace on the weekend means he has scored 11 goals in 19 games for Charlton this season.
