Charlton Athletic fell to their first defeat in seven matches last night against Scunthorpe United.

Lee Bowyer was left fuming after his side fell to a 5-3 reverse at Glanford Park.

The defeat came after the Addicks were 2-1 up before conceding two goals before the break.

Two late goals from the hosts saw them see off their opponents who moved up to ninth in the division.

After the loss, Charlton fell to eighth after their third defeat of the season after a solid run of recent form.

Bowyer was not impressed with his side’s defending and felt his team ‘gave them four goals

Lyle Taylor scored his sixth goal in 11 League One matches with Joe Aribo adding his first double of the season despite conceding five and falling to defeat.

And Bowyer was not impressed with aspects of his side’s play but offered solace to some of his team's positive play in the reverse.

Speaking to the South London Press after the defeat, Bowyer said: “We’ve given them four goals.

“First-half wasn’t good enough defensively. Every time we went forward we looked like we were going to score first-half, created chance after chance. But overall, it’s not good enough.

“We have to come here and win. After watching that, we have to win this game today. I don’t know what happened apart from poor defending. Switching off.

“Whatever way you want to dress it up, it wasn’t good enough.

“We ain’t been like that before. How many goals did they score from set-plays? You could say it was a good game for the neutral, but it was a horrendous game for myself

“Disappointed. For me, watching that game, this is three points dropped. We’ve got to be winning this game.”

The Verdict

Lee Bowyer is right to fume at his side after letting their standards of this season slip.

Charlton have been impressive since their opening day defeat to Sunderland, and that was only their third loss of the campaign.

They have been solid and looked dangerous on the attack, and this defeat was out of character for the Addicks side so far this season.

This could be the rocket that the Addicks players need to bring them back down to earth.

Good results breed confidence - and overconfidence at times - and this could have been that occasion last night.

Expect there to be a reaction back in south-east London this weekend when they return home after two successive away matches.
