Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has delivered his verdict on Millwall’s decision to appoint Gary Rowett as their new manager ahead of the teams’ clash this weekend.
Rowett took over after Neil Harris quit earlier this season and Bowyer has heaped praise on his counterpart ahead of what will likely be a fiercely competed derby.
“Two years ago Gary Rowett was the main man and everyone wanted him,” he told his pre-match press conference on Thursday, reported by the club’s official Twitter account.
Who will come out on top between Millwall and Charlton?
“He’s a good manager and he’s been successful at big clubs. He’s a good appointment for Millwall.”
Charlton have not beaten the Lions since 1996, a match in which Bowyer actually scored, so it is no surprise that only a win will do for them this time around.
Both sides come into the match with a mixed vein of form behind them with Charlton having not won any of their last three games; losing to Bristol City and Preston either side of a point away to West Brom.
Millwall have won just one of their last four but under the guidance of new manager Rowett will be looking to build some serious momentum following a slow start to the season.
I completely agree with Bowyer here, I think Rowett is the perfect appointment for Millwall.
The Stoke City and Derby County jobs ultimately proved to be too much for him, but given how well he did against the odds at Birmingham City, I would back him to do a similar job at The Den.
Saturday will be a fascinating clash between to bosses who will be desperate to win it in order to build momentum for their respective sides.
