Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer claimed he couldn't believe the club managed to seal the signing of Brighton midfielder Beram Kayal on deadline day.

The Israel international will spend the duration of the 2019/20 season on loan with the Addicks after the newly promoted Championship outfit sealed a last-ditch swoop for his services.

The 31-year-old joined Charlton in the eleventh hour of the transfer window following the arrivals of West Brom duo Jonathan Leko and Sam Field on the same day.

Kayal has made 37 Premier League appearances over the last two seasons and was a key player during Brighton's promotion-winning campaign in 2016/17.

Speaking in his pre-Stoke press conference, the Addicks' boss admitted his surprise with Kayal's arrival at the club and went on to claim the experienced midfielder will add plenty of quality to Charlton's side.

"I can’t believe that Beram Kayal has come," Bowyer told the club's Twitter channel.

"Brighton helped us a lot to get him through the door. He’s a very, very good player and he will bring a lot."

The verdict

Kayal's arrival would have come as a very welcome late addition to Charlton's squad before the transfer deadline, as he will equip the Addicks' midfield with bags of experience.

He excelled when he was last playing in the Championship for Brighton, so Charlton will be hoping he repeats these exploits as he fills the defensive midfield void left by Krystian Bielik this summer.

This is a move that should work well for both parties as Kayal will be desperate for regular football after being in and out of the side at Brighton, while Charlton are getting an excellent midfield talent.

He is someone who always gives everything when called upon and Charlton will need this if they are to survive in the second tier this season. They will be hoping Kayal's historic injury troubles don't affect him this term.
