Wigan Athletic boss Leam Richardson has admitted he wants to add another six players to his ranks before the window shuts.

The Latics boss elaborated, nodding towards the spine of his team is what needs more cover. He has identified both the centre of midfield and defence as areas that require extra bodies, which will not only provide cover, it will create competition for places too.

“Our squad is still very light, we've made some quality signings, in my opinion, we need five or six more to be competitive in every game”, he said, as quoted by Wigan Today.

"With our depth, I think people can see at the top end of the pitch we look okay, we've plenty of competition for places and in the wide areas.

"It's the central areas - central defence, cover at the back, centre midfield. In a normal campaign it's testing and taxing."

Wigan have had an impressive window so far, making some key signings. The stand out addition being Charlie Wyke on a free transfer from Sunderland, last season's second highest scorer in the league with 26 goals.

It’s been a mixed start so far for Wigan. After losing 2-1 at the Stadium of Light on the opening day they have since won twice, including a Carabao Cup victory over Hull City last week.

The Lancashire club are back in action tonight as they take on early league leaders Wycombe at the DW Stadium, and it’s a game that the Richardson believes will be a challenge.

“It'll be another tough game, Gareth [Ainsworth] has been there a long time, I imagine they'll be in the top two, three or four, so all eyes will be on them".

The Verdict

Richardson is bang on the money here. Wigan have had a fantastic window so far, with the addition of Wyke and Power to name only two solid signings.

The games come thick and fast in the EFL, and a small squad will undoubtedly struggle to keep up the level of intensity that this division demands. Showing the want to increase his options is already telling of the vision the Yorkshireman has for the season.

If Richardson can get a few more players through the door, especially in the positions he’s identified, this could be a very exciting season for Latics fans.
