Cambridge United are reportedly interested in signing former Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis McGugan, according to Alan Nixon of the Sun

The 30-year-old has been without a club for over a year now after being released by Northampton Town last January following failed spells with Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, Nixon wrote: "CAMBRIDGE. Keen to have a look at Lewis McGugan. Known to Colin Calderwood from Forest days."

After graduating through the Reds' youth system, McGugan went on to play 224 times for the first team, scoring 43 goals and assisting 27 more in that time.

11 goals in 44 appearances for Watford marked a decent return but he quickly fell out of favour at Vicarage Road and was shipped out to Sheffield Wednesday.

Cambridge currently sit 19th in the League Two table and will be looking to strengthen as to avoid a relegation scrap.

They have already been busy this month bringing in highly rated Aston Villa striker Rushian Hepburn-Murphy arriving on loan for the remainder of the season.

The verdict

I think this is well worth the gamble for the Us.

Get him in on a short-term contract and challenge him to rediscover his best form because if he can there is no chance that they will be in a relegation scrap for long.

McGugan's screamers were an iconic part of the Football League for many years and it would be great to see them make a comeback.
