Portsmouth made it two wins from two since the appointment of Danny Cowley as manager on Saturday afternoon, as they beat Shrewsbury Town 2-1 at The New Meadow.

Goals from Marcus Harness and John Marquis put Pompey 2-0 up before the break, and although Nathaneal Ogbeta pulled one back shortly after half time, the visitors were able to hang on for all three points, despite a somewhat contentious sending off for Marquis midway through the second 45.

That result means that Portsmouth have now climbed to fifth in the League One table, meaning their hopes of promotion this season are far from over.

Perhaps not surprisingly therefore, plenty of Portsmouth fans were delighted as they took to Twitter to give their thoughts on the game, and one player who came in for a considerable amount of praise, was Ben Close.

The midfielder produced an impressive performance in the centre of the park for Pompey, helping to control the game while providing a useful shield for the back four in a holding midfield role alongside Tom Naylor, which did not go unnoticed by those Portsmouth fans.
