The new 2021/22 League One season is just around the corner now and it promises to be another dramatic campaign in the third tier of English football with the promotion race looking wide open.
The likes of Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe Wanderers will all have aspirations of bouncing back to the Championship at the first time of asking next term.
While the likes of Portsmouth, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Wigan Athletic and Charlton Athletic are all amongst the sides that will be fancied to mount a major challenge during the new season.
Then there will be a host of other clubs looking to mount promotion pushes of their own under the radar of the bigger names in the division.
With the new League One season nearly upon us, there are a host of transfer stories emerging surrounding some the of the sides in the division.
Here then, we round-up some of the latest of those transfer reports…
According to the latest report from The Scottish Sun, Wigan Athletic have joined the race to secure St Mirren midfielder Jamie McGrath this summer. The Latics have submitted an offer worth around £300,000 that has been turned away by the Scottish side.
The report added that St Mirren are braced for other offers for McGrath and that they have already fielded interest from Aberdeen while one other English side are in the race for his potential signature before the transfer window closes. That comes amid previous links to Peterborough United.
With Wigan’s first offer for McGrath falling short of St Mirren’s asking price which is now believed to be around £500,000, it remains to be seen whether the Latics will come back in for the midfielder this summer.
22 things all Wigan Athletic fans simply must know – But do you?
The latest reports from The Scottish Sun have also confirmed that League One Rotherham United have made an offer worth around £100,000 for defender Conor McCarthy.
It is believed that the Millers’ opening offer has been rejected by the Scottish side but that Rotherham are expected to be coming back in with another bid to tempt them into selling the defender before the window closes.
St Mirren are valuing the defender at around £200,000 so the Millers are going to have to come in with an offer of around that sort of fee if they are to secure the defender’s services.
West Brom’s talented young goalkeeper Josh Griffiths has been a player in-demand this summer and the likes of Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday and Lincoln City in League One have all been linked with a potential move for the keeper following his excellent performances out on loan with Cheltenham Town in League Two last season.
It has now been reported by the Express and Star that the Baggies are favouring a loan move for Griffiths this summer despite the fact that uncertainty remains over the long-term future of their number one stopper Sam Johnstone.
The Baggies already have both David Button and Alex Palmer to call upon between the sticks, so a temporary move for Griffiths could well be the right option for them to decide to take.
It will be interesting to see now whether this will see the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth or Lincoln firm up their interest in the promising keeper.
Promising Ipswich Town midfielder Liam Gibbs has seen his move from Portman Road to fierce rivals Norwich City confirmed now by the Tractor Boys with him making the move to Carrow Road having departed the League One side earlier this summer at the end of his deal.
Gibbs had been offered fresh terms to remain with Ipswich this summer, but instead, he has now chosen to make the move to Norwich City. The Tractor Boys were entitled to compensation for the midfielder due to him still being 18-years-old.
Ipswich have revealed that they have now agreed over a compensation fee with Norwich that will see them recoup some money for the midfield talent.
Sheffield Wednesday are set to face fresh competition in the race to sign Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell on a loan deal this summer.
That comes with the Owls have previously been linked with a potential interest in the stopper by The Sun reporter Alan Nixon. That comes with Burnley keen on sending him out on loan to get him some more game time.
Birmingham City had been linked with a potential move for Peacock-Farrell as well, but they then went onto sign trialist Marija Sarkic.
However, now there are reports from the Daily Mail that Bournemouth are potentially interested in making a move for the Burnley stopper as they seek to find a replacement for Asmir Begovic. That could mean that Sheffield Wednesday’s chance of bringing in the goalkeeper have taken a hit.
