It’s been a busy beginning to the transfer window in League One, with clubs up and down the country seeking to strengthen their squads after moving into the new year amidst the back drop of uncertainty caused by COVID.
Despite finances proving to be tight at many of the league’s club’s, many have been linked with adding fresh blood to their existing teams as they gear up for what is set to be one of the most competitive third division campaigns in recent memory.
Time is really of the essence for these clubs to get their business done, with the mid-season window traditionally going down to the wire with regards to getting certain deals completed before the cut off point at the end of the month.
Here, we have devised a round up of all the latest League One transfer rumours.
Portsmouth eye move veteran defender
As reported by The News recently, Portsmouth are said to have turned their attentions to Charlie Daniels in their pursuit of a new left back following the departure of Cameron Pring who was recalled by his parent club, Bristol City.
Currently on the books of Pompey’s league rivals Shrewsbury Town, the veteran defender has a contract with the club until the end of January, opening up the possibility for the player to depart for pastures new as a free agent if he wishes to see out his current terms.
A former Bournemouth favourite, surely a move back to the South Coast would appeal to the full back, with Kenny Jackett refusing to rule out a move for an older player in that position recently when pressed by the media.
Hull City and QPR close to transfer agreement
Queens Park Rangers and Hull City are said to be close to agreeing a deal for Jordy de Wijs this month, with West London Sport confirming that the defender is set to join the R’s on loan for the rest of the current campaign with a view to making the move permanent in the summer.
The Dutch centre back’s arrival in London is set to allow Conor Masterson to depart on loan from the club in order to give the youngster much needed minutes after making just six appearances for the R’s this term.
Meanwhile, the departure of de Wijs will come as a welcome one to Hull, with the 26-year-old having rarely played for the Tigers this term as they continue to cut costs following their relegation from the Championship last season.
Sunderland target in-form striker
A report in the Scottish Sun has stated that Sunderland have made an approach for Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet, with the Black Cats asking the side north of the border to name their price for the prolific 23-year-old.
Having already hit double figures this term, the player could well be keen to ply his trade in England after racking up the goals for Hibs, Dunfermline and Raith Rovers.
The signing of a new striker is sure to be viewed as something of a priority by Lee Johnson, with the Sunderland boss having seen his current batch of marksmen so far failing to hit the heights expected of them this term, with Charlie Wyke having found the net the most with a paltry seven goals so far.
Ipswich Town ace of interest to West Ham and Leeds United
Football Insider are reporting that Ipswich Town’s young prospect Elkan Baggott is of interest to Premier League duo West Ham and Leeds United, with the player said to have turned down the offer of a new contract at Portman Road.
The teenager has now seemingly put both club’s on alert of his potential availability, with the six foot five inch defender seen as one of the brightest players to come through the ranks in the lower reaches of the Football League in recent months.
Stoke City set to win race for Charlton man
Football Insider are also reporting today that Stoke City have agree terms with Charlton Athletic winger Alfie Doughty, paving the way for the in-demand attacker to complete a move to the Bet365 Stadium despite interest from the likes of Celtic and Rangers in recent weeks.
The Addicks have seemingly tried and failed to secure the 21-year-old on a new contract but may well hold onto the player until the end of the current campaign, with Lee Bowyer recently claiming that the player has agreed to remain with the South London outfit until the end of the season, opening up the possibility of Doughty being loaned straight back to the Valley.
Blackpool in the hunt for Rangers-linked striker
Blackpool are said to have enquired about the signing of Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph, with Glasgow Live reporting that the Bloomfield Road side have been quoted a fee of £1 million by their league rivals.
With the Latics struggling for cash financially after a turbulent 2020, they could well look to cash in on their young star as pressure mounts on the powers that be at the DW Stadium, opening the door for a January departure for the teenager.
