League One rising star should be targeted by Sheffield Wednesday

Published

on

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to tighten their defence, following a campaign that saw them concede 11 more goals than in any of previous three seasons.

It was undoubtedly the reason that they were unable to push for a play-off spot as they outscored both seventh place Preston and eight place Millwall. Consequently, they should be looking at bringing in fresh defensive talent like Cameron Burgess.

Burgess was a highly rated youngster at Fulham where, despite making four Championship appearances, he was unable to break into the first team. Subsequent loan spells across League One and his signing by Scunthorpe United have seen him develop into a first team regular, with his 6ft4 frame belying his naturally strong passing ability. At just 22-years-old, there is still plenty of time for him to develop and be moulded into individual team’s playing styles.

Jos Luhukay may be looking for more proven defenders. While that should also be on the Dutchman’s shopping list, signing a more youthful player would do wonders for the balance of a team that has an average age of 28.3. This is even more pressing given the unclear status of last season loan signing Frederico Venancio. The 25-year old Portuguese defender had a strong season but the price tag may be off-putting to the club as they are yet to make a move or statement.

Luhukay will be well aware of the need to bring in fresh legs to an Owls defence that was far too leaky. A move for Burgess could prove an astute signing to start sorting that out.
