The Football League has announced the three-man shortlist for the League One player of the year award.
Players from the top three clubs in the League are represented as Bristol City’s Luke Freeman, Preston’s Joe Garner, and MK Dons’ Dele Alli are the three fighting it out for the accolade.
Bristol City winger Luke Freeman has been one of the standout players in the division this year and he has been a big part of a Reds side that has already confirmed their promotion back to the Championship.
Freeman started as he helped City brush aside Bradford 6-0 at Valley Parade and will be hoping they can earn a similar result on Saturday against Coventry, where a win would see them clinch the League One title.
The ex-Stevenage winger has seven goals to his name so far but it is his 16 assists that has rightfully earned Freeman a mention in the Football League awards.
Second placed Preston North End are still relying on top goalscorer Joe Garner to fire them into the Championship alongside Bristol City.
Garner has undoubtedly been Preston’s player of the year, having scored 20 goals despite missing a lengthy period of the season through injury.
The 27 year old is just one goal behind ex Chesterfield striker Eoin Doyle in the League One top goalscorer list and will be aiming to give his hopes of earning multiple awards a boost by overtaking Doyle on Friday night at Port Vale.
The third and final candidate is Milton Keynes Dons youngster Dele Alli.
The home-grown 19 year old has been a pivotal player in the Dons’ promotion push and, despite playing in centre midfield, already has 15 goals to his name this season.
Alli is also in contention for the Football League young player of the year award after this season’s exploits, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition of Crewe, saw him earn a multi-million pound move to Tottenham in January.
