Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony has issued his verdict on the second series of the 'Sunderland Til I Die' documentary and has claimed that transfer deadline is "never a good time to be needing a player".

The second series of the Netflix documentary was released earlier this week and, across six parts, depicts Sunderland's 2018/19 season.

Using behind the scenes footage, interviews, and match coverage, the docu-series gives an interesting insight into what was a hugely dramatic campaign for the Black Cats.

Having been relegated from the Championship the previous season, Sunderland's main aim was promotion but they ultimately fell short – suffering two Wembley defeats.

First, Portsmouth beat them in the EFL Trophy final and then they suffered play-off final heartbreak as a late Charlton Athletic goal saw them secure promotion.

There were also some dramatic moments off the pitch. None more so than the exit of top scorer Josh Maja in January – with the 21-year-old sealing a move to Bordeaux in the middle of their promotion push.

Peterborough owner MacAnthony took to Twitter earlier today to share his thoughts on the series and provide some transfer insight.

Maja's exit left the Black Cats heading into transfer deadline day needing a replacement and they eventually landed Will Grigg from Wigan for £4 million, a record transfer in League One.

With just eight goals in 49 appearances – the move has not worked out so far.

The Verdict

The makes of 'Sunderland Til I Die' could not really have asked for a more exciting second series.

Two Wembley defeats and some dramatic transfer mean that it makes excellent viewing, perhaps not for Black Cats fans.

As an owner of another League One club, it's interesting to get this insight from MacAnthony.
