Doncaster Rovers star John Marquis has moved to clarify his situation at the club after seeing a January move to Sunderland blocked.

The impressive striker was courted by the Black Cats on deadline day, but ultimately stayed in South Yorkshire with Rovers.

However, Marquis has admitted that while he was happy and content with the decision to keep him at the Keepmoat Stadium, he could reassess his options in the summer.

"The summer is a different time, things may change" Marquis told the Doncaster Free Press, via a report in the Sunderland Echo.

"Depending on what league we're in could also make a difference. "I've always said I want to play as high as possible, I want to challenge myself and I want to improve.

"I'm doing that at the minute at Doncaster. "In the summer it may be a different story."

Marquis has been in fine form for Doncaster this season, smashing in some 18 goals to enhance what was already a growing reputation for the League One club.

However, his admission might be a worry for Rovers fans, who will know they don't have the financial muscle to compete with the bigger clubs in League One and above.

Sunderland opted to sign Will Grigg in the end on deadline day, but they could well come back for Marquis knowing that the player might be keen on making the switch.

The Verdict

Any players is always going to want to challenge themselves and this is no different with Marquis.

You're always going to attract attention when you're hitting the back of the net, and Sunderland will fancy a player like Marquis if they can get him.

He's certainly capable of playing at a higher level, and he will be keen to challenge himself going forward.
