Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell has backed Ipswich Town to win promotion this season after they beat his side 2-0 on Saturday.

Goals from Freddie Ladapo and Marcus Harness in either half ensured the second-placed Tractor Boys picked up the win and they're now just two points behind leaders Plymouth, although just one ahead of Sheffield Wednesday, in the battle for automatic promotion.

And, speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, Caldwell admitted he was impressed with Kieran McKenna's side, who he feels will be playing in the Championship next season.

"We said before the game they are very good - I'm pretty sure they'll get promoted. That was the best of what League One has to offer, but in terms of performance levels I think we were a bit off where we have been."

The Suffolk outfit will now turn their attention from the league, as they're in EFL Trophy action this week before an FA Cup tie against Buxton at Portman Road next weekend.

They face Fleetwood Town in their next league game on December 2.

The verdict

It was a good win for Ipswich on Saturday and they clearly impressed Caldwell, who has also come up against Plymouth in recent weeks.

Many will agree with his assessment that Ipswich will go up, and there's no denying they have plenty of quality and strength in depth, with the points return at this stage showing how good they are.

Right now though, it seems like a three-horse race for the two spots and it will be interesting to see who does last the distance.
