Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann has backed Leeds United forward Mallik Wilks to be a man in demand this summer following his impressive loan spell last season.

Wilks was in fine form at the Keepmoat Stadium, contributing and impressive 16 goals as Rovers came within touching distance of the play-off final only to be seen off on penalties in heartbreaking fashion at Charlton.

However, manager McCann has backed Wilks to spark a transfer scramble this summer, insisting a whole host of clubs will want to sign the youngster.

“These two boys came in and no one knew them, everyone was wondering what to expect. They went from strength to strength and now everyone is after them, it gives you a sense of pride in the job.” McCann told Leeds Live in relation to Wilks and fellow loanee, Herbie Kane.

It remains to be seen whether Wilks will be given his chance at Elland Road this summer, with the Whites' own failure to win promotion something which will have boosted Wilks' chances of landing a spot in Marcelo Bielsa's squad.

Indeed, Bielsa is not averse to giving young players a chance, and he proved last season with the likes of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton appearing regularly that he is willing to drop his young players in at the deep end if needed.

The Verdict

I think Wilks might get his chance you know, why not?

He was brilliant in Doncaster and that's all you can ask for in a loan spell, so if he isn't given his chance, he might have to questions his long-term future at Elland Road.

He's a top talent though on his day, and if he can knuckle down this summer and improve further, then he might well just convince Bielsa to give him a go.
