Caldwell is the new Wigan Athletic boss
Caldwell will be staying at the DW Stadium for a further year

have confirmed that Wigan Athletic captain Gary Caldwell has signed a new one year contract at the DW Stadium, which will also see him take on a coaching role within the club's academy.

After an injury hit campaign last season, it was unclear whether the Latics would hand a new deal to the 32 year old, although he did come back in contention for the unsuccessful Play-Off venture. He has racked up over 100 appearances for Uwe Rosler's side.

Rosler told the official club website: "Gary has been a great servant to the club in his time here, and we are delighted we will be able to continue calling upon his experience and professionalism next season when the tension will be high and we need big characters in our dressing room.

"On the field, we saw at the end of the season what an impact he made, especially in the play-off games when he played very well - and that calmness under pressure then spreads all over the pitch.''

The former Celtic man, who has 55 caps for Scotland, is also seen to have a vital role to play off the field for Wigan, as Rosler explains further behind the reason to give the defender a coaching role.

''Gary's presence is vital to build a great dressing room. He is a role model to the younger players who can see the standards he sets every day in training and on matchday.''

"Whether he is playing in the team or not, he is someone who can have a major influence at the club."

Caldwell also explained to the Latics' official website how much he is looking forward to his combined role next season. "What he (Rosler) described really excited me, to stay on at the club as a player but also continue coaching is a great opportunity for me.''
