John Terry could be set to return to Aston Villa as manager, with Thierry Henry appearing to drop out of the running to replace Steve Bruce.

The Frenchman was the huge favourite for the job this morning but reports emerged later in the day indicating that he was attracting interest from Monaco.

The Ligue 1 side, who Henry played for in the 90s, are poised to sack Leonardo Jardim and have identified the Arsenal legend as his replacement.

That appears to have moved Terry closer to landing the Villa job, with Daily Mail journalist Laurie Whitwell revealing that the 37-year-old is growing in confidence about returning to the West Midlands club.

Terry spent last season as a player with Villa, impressing in their campaign that ultimately ended in disappointment after a play-off final loss to Fulham.

Despite those connections with the club, this would be the former England international's first managerial experience, so he would represent a major risk in that sense for the new Villa owners.

Villa are hoping to have a new manager in place for the game against Swansea on October 20.

The Verdict

Obviously these things can change very quickly but Terry seems to have a real chance of landing the job, particularly after the Henry news.

Whether he would be a good appointment is open to debate as despite his experience in the game, he has never been a manager.

Either way, the Villa owners need to make a decision quickly so the club can look to move forward.
