Sheffield Wednesday could have to fork out £2m if they want to secure key midfield target Joey Pelupessy from Dutch side Heracles.

Even though the 24-year old only has six months to run on his contract, the Eredivisie club still want the Owls to pay £2m for his signature according to the Daily Mirror transfer blog (20:35).

The report reveals that the Yorkshire club had made a £1.5m offer for the player and given Pelupessy’s desire to move an agreement shouldn’t be that hard to reach.

Should he join, Pelupessy would be new manager Jos Luhukay’s first signing and would strengthen Wednesday in an area of the pitch they are particularly short.

Sam Hutchinson, Barry Bannan and Kieran Lee are three central midfield options that the new manager is having to do without because of the clubs massive injury list and that has meant Jacob Butterfield and Dave Jones are the senior options for that position.

The pair have struggled to make a positive impact in recent weeks, so the arrival of a new midfielder will be very welcome.

The Verdict

The Owls could really do with getting this deal over the line as it’s an area that desperately needs strengthening and Pelupessy has good pedigree.

£2m for someone who is out of contract in six months does seem a bit steep, however when he becomes a free agent there could be a lot more interest in the player.

Therefore, it would be best for Wednesday to pay the money to get the man Luhukay wants now.
