Dean Smith gave the go-ahead for Aston Villa to appoint John Terry as his assistant after a productive meeting with the former player.

It became clear at a very early stage in Villa's search for a new boss that the board wanted Terry to be part of the coaching staff.

Many questioned whether that was the right decision but the Telegraph have revealed that it was not the case.

Instead, they report that whilst Terry was suggested as an option for Smith, having him as part of his backroom team was not a deal-breaker.

However, the former Brentford boss was happy to speak to the England legend and approved his appointment after hearing what he had to say.

As well as that, they state that Smith feels Terry's popularity in the dressing room and the respect he has from the players will be an important factor.

The duo, along with Smith's long-serving assistant Richard O'Kelly, will be formally unveiled at a news conference tomorrow.

Their first game in charge will be against Swansea at Villa Park on Saturday.

The Verdict

It seemed strange that the board were so insistent on Terry being involved in the new setup, as ultimately it should be down to the new manager on who he wants to work with.

Therefore, Villa fans will be delighted that it was Smith's call to bring the former England captain in.

It's also good to see that Smith recognises the obvious qualities that Terry has and he will be an important figure in this new-look managerial team.
