West Brom are unlikely to bring in Dwight Gayle this month even though Slaven Bilic is looking to strengthen his squad to help their promotion push.

The Newcastle United striker, who has struggled for minutes under Steve Bruce this season, was on loan with Albion last season and enjoyed a hugely successful spell at The Hawthorns.

He contributed 24 goals as the Baggies reached the play-offs, reinforcing the fact that he is a quality operator in the Championship.

Therefore, a host of clubs are expected to be interested in the ex-Crystal Palace man becomes available and many fans have been calling for Albion to bring Gayle back, with Charlie Austin and particularly Kenneth Zohore struggling.

Yet, The Athletic reporter Steve Madeley played down the chances of Gayle linking up with the club again when asked by a fan to give a one-word answer on whether he would return.

No… There’s your one-word answer. Longer explanation: It’s not beyond the realms of possibility but I’d say it’s increasingly unlikely for a number of reasons.”

Gayle has not been included in the Magpies squad for their FA Cup clash at Rochdale today.

The verdict

Like every club in the Championship, Albion would love to have Gayle because he guarantees goals at this level.

He proved that over the years, including last season, when he was outstanding in the West Midlands and seemed to really enjoy his time at the club.

So, this news will obviously be a blow and the fans will be hoping that small chance of him joining increases, because you would expect him to secure a move this month but the financial aspect of the deal will be an issue.
