Tim Cahill is closing in on a sensational return to Millwall despite late interest in the veteran attacker from Championship rivals.

The 38-year old is believed to have flown into England towards the end of last week in order to seal a move back to The Den, however late interest from Nottingham Forest and QPR threatened to prevent the deal.

Yet, the Evening Standard are reporting that Cahill is going to hold further talks with Millwall this week and that could see him putting pen to paper on a short-term contract that is on the table.

The former Everton man is looking for regular football in order to help his chances of going to the World Cup with Australia in the summer.

Despite playing as a central midfielder in his first stint at The Den, Cahill would be signed as a forward option for Neil Harris. The Lions boss played with Cahill when he was at the club so knows what he can bring to the team.

As Cahill is a free agent there is no rush to complete a deal before the transfer window shuts on Wednesday night.

The Verdict

Given his history with the club and Neil Harris it would be really surprising to see Cahill turn down Millwall for another Championship side.

Whilst nothing has been signed it could still happen but the latest report suggests he will become a Millwall player.

Whether he is the right man to add goals to The Lions sometimes blunt attack remains to be seen but his arrival will certainly mean a lot to the fans and Cahill will be eager to impress with the World Cup approaching.
