Ben Davies would like to try and show Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp what he can do next summer in pre-season but if the Reds are willing to let him leave next year then Sheffield United could be keen on keeping him.

That is the latest update around the defender from Yorkshire Live reporter Nathan Hemmingham, anyway, who was speaking to the Liverpool Echo's Blood Red podcast earlier this week, discussing the latest situation with Davies and just how the state of play is looking for the defender at the moment.

Signed by Liverpool in January, Davies has not yet been able to force his way in at Anfield and instead has moved to Bramall Lane on loan, with there obviously a chance that he could end up staying there past the end of this season if the Reds decide that he is surplus to requirements on Merseyside.

It appears it could go either way for Davies right now, then, with Hemmingham offering up this update:

“He said first and foremost he’s not thinking about anything major. It’s just about this season and playing again – and playing to the best of his ability. And trying to get back to the player he was at Preston when Liverpool came in for him.

“Then in the summer he wants to go back to Liverpool to see if the door is open. Because you don’t know what happens.

“He wants to have a good pre-season with Liverpool. See where the land lies, and see if he can try and impress the manager, Jurgen Klopp.

“But if Liverpool are happy to let him leave permanently, I’m sure, providing he impresses and become the player everyone who has tracked him these past 12 months have been convinced he is, Sheffield United will be looking at that.”

The Verdict

Davies needs to do what is best for his career and though it makes sense that he obviously wants to fight for an opportunity at Liverpool, he'll also want to establish whether he even has a chance there first and foremost.

If the Reds don't want him it makes sense for him to look elsewhere and we'll just have to wait and see what next summer brings for him.
