Sunderland confirmed that they had signed experienced defender Glenn Loovens on a free transfer last night, as Jack Ross strengthens his squad ahead of the new season.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man was a free agent after leaving Hillsborough this summer but he has now joined the Wearside club on a two-year deal.

And, the Sunderland Echo reveal how the former Cardiff defender told the official site that he was delighted to have made the move.

"I’m very pleased. Sunderland is a big club with great support so I can’t wait to get started."

He also added that he was impressed with the facilities, as well as praising the club's supporters who have had it tough in recent years.

"I’ve got lost already twice! The place looks really nice, I can’t get wait to started and get in the team, get as fit as possible. I’ve played here before so I know the support is amazing. The more, the merrier."

Loovens is Jack Ross' seventh signing in this window, with a few more still expected to join before they kick-off against Charlton on August 4.

The Verdict

This is a very good signing for the Black Cats and Loovens is clearly looking forward to playing for the club.

He will bring real experience, strength and organisation to the defence and could be a key player in the upcoming campaign.

It seems a good move for both parties and now the 34-year old will be concentrating on building his fitness up ahead of the opener.
